For Founders in the Middle of It: 3 Ways to Build Smarter, Not Harder
Growing a small business? You’re probably doing 10 jobs at once — and still wondering if it’s enough.
There’s the visible stuff: the emails, the invoices, the content, the client calls, the launch plans, the revenue milestone goals, and the glowing testimonials from happy customers.
But then, there’s the other work — the work that rarely makes it into a spreadsheet or social post. The unseen work.
Holding the vision when no one else can see it yet
Making decisions in the dark with limited data and infinite variables
Learning as you go (and still showing up like a pro)
Managing your own energy while juggling the entirety of the business
Continuing through the messy middle as it takes longer and becomes harder than you anticipated
That kind of work? It’s invisible. It’s quiet. But it’s everything.
It’s also what makes you a builder — someone who shows up day after day in the arena, not just reacting to the business, but shaping it with intention.
This week, in honor of Small Business Week, I want to remind you:
You are doing something deeply worthwhile.
You’re allowed to slow down and build smarter — not just harder.
You are likely further along than you think.
Whether you're pivoting, in growth mode, or simply trying to find your rhythm, here are three powerful ways to build with more clarity and momentum:
1. Simplify Your Systems
When your business is growing, decision fatigue is real.
A simple SOP (Standard Operating Procedure), content calendar, or weekly structure can remove dozens of micro-decisions a day — freeing up energy for the work that matters most.
Ask: What could I automate, templatize, or stop overthinking this week?
2. Zoom Out Regularly
Strategic clarity rarely comes from inside the weeds.
Build in space to step back — weekly or monthly — to review what’s working, what feels forced, and what’s truly moving the needle. I personally do this in what I call think-tank time every single morning.
This is how you shift from reactive to proactive — and that’s where real momentum lives.
3. Celebrate Your Growth
Most small business owners are so focused on what’s next that they miss how far they’ve come.
Take 10 minutes to write down your wins from the past 90 days — big or small. Better yet, create a wins document to review whenever you need.
Momentum also compounds when you acknowledge progress, not just chase the next goal. And if you’re deep in the build, with not enough data just yet, having this list of “milestones” hit will be incredibly helpful to your peace of mind.
